The great Austrian pianist Jörg Demus, who is as musically active and internationally admired as ever, has given his patronage to the 1st International Jörg Demus Festival, which will take place in Freiburg/Breisgau in 2017. It is his desire and his personal intention to invite local as well as international artists to his festival for a joint enterprise, in order to give music lovers from far and wide a chance to experience important masterpieces of great composers.
It is a matter close to his heart to play the music of great composers on the instruments of their time. The different design and sound of historical instruments enable us to hear and to understand the musical works in a new way. The creation of Bartolomeo Cristofori‘s fortepiano, whose principle design is the basis for modern grand pianos, in the first half of the 18th century, enabled a dynamically graded way of playing for the first time and thus added new dimensions of expression to music.
Many of Jörg Demus' vinyl and CD recordings were made with historical grand pianos and he owns one of the worldwide largest collections of various instruments from he 18th, 19th and 20th century. The experience of authentic sound, which is so important to him, will be one aspect of the festival. Therefore some of the concerts will be given on historical instruments.
